FAQs

How long has this company been around?

Moonbug Therapy, formally known as Columbia Speaks/CS Therapy, has been serving clients in the greater Columbia area since 2008.

Why the name Moonbug?

Check out this short video explaining the meaning behind our brand name.

What can I expect on the first day?

Evaluations typically last around one hour. The therapist will evaluate your child to assess all areas covered in their domain, depending on the type of therapy. This includes an interview with the caregiver(s), observation of your child in their environment, and often a more formal standardized assessment. Evaluations are an opportunity for the therapist to collaborate with the family to create initial goals for treatment if a child qualifies for services. Please provide a quiet place in a comfortable room for the therapist and child to interact. Therapists will bring all tools and activities necessary for the initial evaluation.

How often will my child get therapy and for how long?

The frequency and duration of services will be determined at the evaluation based on your child’s needs. Many children are seen for treatment sessions once per week for 60-minute sessions.

How long will my child be in therapy?

There is no set limit or expectation. Children progress at different rates. Goals can be added or changed throughout treatment as goals are met and the therapists learn more about your child’s needs.

Where will therapy take place?

Therapy can occur in your child’s natural environment. This can be at home, their daycare, school, or after-school program. We also have a clinic located in West Columbia for families that prefer an outpatient setting for therapy.

Do I have to be present or can I be present for my child’s therapy?

For children being seen at daycare or school, parent presence is not required, and the therapist will keep in contact with you to provide updates and recommendations for home. When therapy occurs in the home environment, therapists will discuss their recommendation for parent presence based on age, attention, and child tolerance to promote the most success for the child.

What insurance plans are you currently in-network with?

We are currently in-network with South Carolina Medicaid, Blue Choice Medicaid, Molina, Select Health, Absolute Total Care, Wellcare, and BabyNet.

We will work with those without insurance and those with out-of-network policies by offering reasonable rates and exploring all therapy options.

What if my insurance changes during the course of treatment?

In the event that your insurance plan changes during the course of treatment, please contact the office to proceed with steps to make sure we have the correct information on file.

What is the difference between physical therapy and occupational therapy?

While physical therapy will focus on developing motor skills and range of motion, occupational therapy will address improving skills for function. A PT may work with your child on strengthening muscle groups to progress rolling, crawling, walking, and balance, while the OT works toward independence in school skills, self-care, and coordination for completing activities. OTs can also focus on sensory regulation, social skills, and attention—areas that impact how we function throughout our day. Both therapists will use age-appropriate play to address their goals.

I see you have OTR and COTA, SLP and SLP-A, PT, and PTA on staff. What is the difference?

The Registered Occupational Therapist, Speech-Language Pathologist, and Physical Therapist are trained in evaluating, interpreting evaluation results, creating the plan of care, and treatment strategies to carry out the plan of care for clients.

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, Speech Language Pathologist- Assistant, and Physical Therapy Assistants are well trained in treatment strategies to carry out the plan of care set in place by the evaluating therapist for each client.

The OTR/SLP/PT and COTA/SLP-A/PTA work closely together to provide the best interventions to facilitate quality care for each client in their caseload.

Do you have interpretive services?

At this time, Moonbug Therapy does not provide interpretive services. However, we would be glad to speak with you about services in the area.

Do you treat the hearing impaired? Can your team sign when necessary?

Therapists on our team are familiar with basic signs, though we suggest having a relative or personal interpreter to facilitate communication long term.
